Toeing the start line of Tough Mudder Chicago 2014, Gaby Martinez stands beside her long-term companion, (let's call him "Dave"), blending into the sea of Mudders at the 10am start wave. Start line emcee Sean Corvelle encourages all Mudders to take a knee. Gaby takes Dave’s hand as Sean lightens his tone. "Look around you," he says, pausing to scan the crowd. “Every single one of us has one thing in common.

One of the first things you’ll notice upon walking into Tough Mudder Headquarters is a cast of characters as electrifying and diverse as our on-course obstacles. And while there’s no doubt you’re familiar with our military-style obstacles, few have a chance to meet the minds behind the mud-coated madness. So to give you a behind-the-scenes, insider look at TMHQ, over the next few months, we’ll be serving up some TMHQ Q&As to help you get to know some of our most admired team members.

So you’ve made a promise to finally whip yourself into shape (for real this time). Well, guess what? You’re already winning. Like signing up for a Tough Mudder, making the decision to get your act together is the beginning of one epic life-changing experience. Think back to the last time you were at a race’s start line. Now envision the voice and face of that start line emcee. Can you picture him or her? Didn’t think so.

Now envision yourself at the Tough Mudder start line. A little different? Yea. That’s Sean Corvelle, Mudder Nation’s most motivating Mudder, that just came to mind. And while we all know Sean for his rousing start line speeches, there’s much more to the man behind the mic.

So to help all you Mudders get better acquainted, we sat down with Sean to talk life, obstacles and the power of positive energy.

Unlike many mud runs, Tough Mudder’s 10-12 mile military obstacle course isn’t a race—it’s a challenge where camaraderie triumphs over course times; cooperation over competition. And because of this, our courses have evolved into a mud-coated metaphor for overcoming obstacles, triumph over adversity and the resilience of the human spirit.

As we grow older, we remind ourselves that “age is only a number” more and more frequently. However, few of us actually put this mantra into action. Joe Perry is one of these few.

A few months ago, we did an inspiring Q&A with Joe Perry, a Hall of Fame Mudder--literally. Last year, Joe was inducted into his town’s Sports Hall of Fame for his Tough Mudder accomplishments. Inspired by his Q&A words of wisdom, we asked Joe to share the tale of his Mudder journey.

Traditional economic theory states that humans are fundamentally motivated by self-interest. Here at Tough Mudder, however, we’re callin’ BS.

Sometimes a few words of wisdom is all it takes to move man into action. During the toughest of times, we all access our internal, inspirational arsenal for reassurance and motivation. And as all Mudders know, inspiration, like plunging off Walk the Plank, is something you can never get too much of.

So to help get you out of bed, out of a rut, or out of your comfort zone and into the Tough Mudder start chute, here are TM's top five quotes for Mudder motivation.

To no surprise, TMHQ is home to many a dream job, and arguably the most coveted among these is Head Course Designer—a title held by one bold soul since Tough Mudder's inception in 2009. An ever-elusive, globetrotting go-getter, we caught up with the maddest mind in mud this off season to ask the questions on every Mudder's mind.

When Ryan Atkins told the border control officer his reason for entering into the US from Canada in mid-November, the officer noted that Raceway Park, host of World's Toughest Mudder 2013, was a common calling for crossing Canadians that day. Without missing a beat, his girlfriend, Lindsay, sitting beside him, wittingly remarked, “Yeah, but you haven't had the winner come through yet, have you?”
