Conquer Obstacles on and Off the Course like This Tough Mother

By TMHQ | 17. December 2015

Before turning 30, Sherry Bullock was looking for a new challenge to celebrate the milestone birthday.  A mother of two girls, ages seven and three, she is the pillar of strength they look up to, and learn from. So when a friend asked her to join their team at Tough Mudder Virginia, she knew she couldn’t say no.

Her attitude is one of the many reasons why Ziploc® brand formed Team Tough Mother made of national and local influencers who participated in Tough Mudder events to honor tough mothers, just like Sherry, around the globe.

How did you train for your first Tough Mudder?

I trained at home with my home workouts, Insanity Max 30, ate clean, and ran outside when the North Carolina weather would let me.

How did you feel the day of your event?

I was so nervous I didn't even look up the obstacles beforehand, but I showed up on event day with a huge smile on my face and butterflies in my stomach. The weather was a little over 100 degrees, but I still felt motivated to give 110% at each obstacle. It helped that I had a team of 29 amazing people pushing me every step of the way.

What motivated you to tackle this kind of challenge?

Being a mom is a factor when I make all decisions in life, but the decision to do this event was both for me and for my children. I wanted to show myself just how strong I was.  I accomplished both things I set out to do: I inspired myself and had stories to share with my little ones.

By mile 6 the going gets tough, what inspired you to keep going to make it to the finish line?

Running through each obstacle I often thought of my girls. I knew that even though they may not be old enough to understand what I was doing, one day they would be, and I want to show them how important it is to be a strong woman. If I can get through these obstacles, they can get through tough obstacles in life too.

Running a Tough Mudder can make you feel like you can conquer the world, has it changed your perspective at all?

It really changed how I handle life. On the course, there were walls to climb over that didn't seem possible to me, but I kept telling myself that I could do it, even if I needed to grab the hand above me. I have a fresh outlook that I didn’t have before. I smile more, I help others more, I want to show my children that they are strong, and that there’s a way to accomplish everything you want in life by never giving up.

Ziploc® brand bags with Easy Open Tabs were available at every Tough Mudder bag drop so participants could store their gear during and after each event Ziploc® brand also created a video to showcase how moms triumph over chaos from everyday obstacles.
