If you’re getting advice from even the most seasoned World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM) contenders, be sure to take it with a grain of salt (or more appropriately, sand) because for the first time ever, the extreme 24-hour military obstacle course race will be held on never-before-experienced WTM terrain--the desert sands of Las Vegas.
And while the scene at Lake Las Vegas on November 15 and 16, 2014 will be something no Mudder has ever experienced before, there is one man capable of giving Mudders a sneak peak behind WTM’s mud-coated curtain--Tough Mudder’s Head Course Designer, Nolan Kombol.
The kind (yet twisted) soul that he is, Nolan has requested to write a series of WTM Pro Tip blog posts leading up to WTM 2014 to provide the most hardcore Mudders with exclusive, insider tips that could make or break their race. Having already covered tips for organizing your WTM pit area, we move onto today’s topic: WTM Pit Crew Support.

The WTM Pit Crew was created in 2013 with the intention of giving additional support to athletes during the 24 hours of World’s Toughest Mudder.
This year we have a few changes to the WTM Pit Crew Rules, including:
-There are only two pit crew members allowed per participant
-All pit crew members and participants have 24-hour access to the WTM Pit
-Camping is allowed in the pit area and only one tent space will be provided per participant
-Pit crew members will have access to official timing tent and ability to print lap times and reports
Additionally, here is a checklist of six points to go over with your pit crew:
1. Pit Set Up: It’s going to be a bit of a hike between the parking lot and the Pit. Your pit crew will come in handy during load in and tent set up.
2. Scouting Report: Because the venue this year will be a big change from years past, your pit crew should plan on supporting you during the first lap to review the WTM course and help develop an appropriate strategy.
3. Weather Report: The desert in November takes both extremes. Your pit crew can help support you by carefully monitoring temperatures during the 24 hours to help prepare equipment and clothing strategy.
4. Food Preparation: For top athletes and those looking to achieve 75+ miles, there will be little time to prep proper nutrition and hydration. Between laps, your pit crew can help prep ready-to-eat meals and snacks and ensure you are sufficiently hydrated.
5. Participant & Competitor Timing: Multiple timing tents will be placed in the WTM Pit with full access granted to both athletes and their pit crew. Between laps, pit crew members can sort and print different lap reports for their athlete as well as other competitors.
-Ability to review average lap times and help to maintain consistent pace
-Strategy review for different lap strategies
-Competitor pace review
-Printed reports for review and discussion within the tent space
6. Equipment & Clothing Preparation: During the 24 hours of WTM, athlete clothing will get worn and wet. Between laps, pit crew members should plan on cleaning and drying clothes so that athletes can make a quick transition into fresh clothes between laps.
