If you’re getting advice from even the most seasoned World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM) contenders, be sure to take it with a grain of salt (or more appropriately, sand) because for the first time ever, the extreme 24-hour military obstacle course race will be held on never-before-experienced WTM terrain—the desert sands of Las Vegas.
And while the scene at Lake Las Vegas on November 15 and 16, 2014 will be something no Mudder has ever experienced before, there is one man capable of giving Mudders a sneak peak behind WTM’s mud-coated curtain—Tough Mudder’s Head Course Designer, Nolan Kombol.
The kind (yet twisted) soul that he is, Nolan has requested to write a series of WTM Pro Tip blog posts leading up to WTM 2014 to provide the most hardcore Mudders with exclusive, insider tips that could make or break their race.
Today’s topic? Preparing your pit area.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE WTM 2014 PIT
The 2014 WTM pit will differ significantly from the pit area used in past WTM races. Each participant will be given a single 10’x10’ square to set up a campsite for the 24 hours of World’s Toughest Mudder. Below is a general layout of the pit and a suggested pit space layout with suggested supplies. Please remember this is only a guide. Local conditions and specific needs should be considered at all times when preparing for your pit space.
THE WTM 2014 PIT LAYOUT
Below is exclusive look at an actual (possibly confidential?) TMHQ operations department document which lays out the basic plan overview of the 2014 WTM pit. Once the race begins on Saturday morning the pit will be completely closed to the public for 24 hours. The pit will be located on a stretch of flat desert land alongside Lake Las Vegas. The course will run down the center of the pit with equal access to the start from all sides.
PIT SPACE LAYOUT RECOMMENDATION
Each participant will be allotted a 10’x10’ space within the main pit area. Only participants will be allowed a pit space. A participant’s pit crew must share space with a registered participant. Below is a standard layout of the pit space and suggested supplies.
NOLAN’S MUST-HAVE BASICS
- Ground cover: Suggested for a smooth camping surface and to deter insects.
- Tent basic: (2) person tent should be plenty for 2 people.
- Floor mat/s: Suggested for a durable changing and washing surface.
- Drying rack: Suggested for hanging and dry clothes / shoes / wetsuit.
- Folding chair/s: Basic folding camp chairs.
- Heavy duty storage bin: Suggested for secure and weatherproof supply and food storage.
- Sleeping bag/s: Synthetic sleeping bags rated for 20 degrees F recommended.
ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES WORTH CONSIDERING
- Camp shovel for uneven ground leveling
- (2) 1 gallon jugs
- Large black garbage bags for wet and muddy gear
- First Aid Kit
